Christian militarism in Texas compliments of Rick Perry

The Texas Freedom Network has reported on a Christian militaristic impulse raising its ugly head in the state of Texas.

"Texas Gov. Rick Perry is calling on Texas pastors to defeat 'radical jihadists' who threaten our nation's 'Judeo Christian heritage.'"

The invitation to conservative evangelical Christian pastors says, in part, "...While Congress occupies its time trying to legislate defeat in Iraq, we hope you will attend a Pastors' Policy Briefing that will equip you to walk point in the war of values and ideas...

"...(W)e must ally godly people and seek God's provision for the resources, the courage, and the strength necessary to win, and ultimately, glorify Him."

This Pastors' Policy Briefing, to be held on Oct. 9-10 in the city of Austin is the eighth such event since May of 2005 and Governor Perry "has been the featured speaker at all of them." It is free of charge and thousands of clergy and their wives attend. (... "Gays and same-sex marriage were the major Restoration Project demons in 2005 and 2006. Muslims now appear to be the enemy du jour.)

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee will also attend, along with David Barton, a Christian theocrat who heads up the notorious WallBuilders, as well as Kelly Shackelford the head honcho of the Texas affiliate of Dobson's Focus on the Family.

Here's part of Perry's invitation:

"Both our nation and our Judeo Christian heritage are under attack by a force that is more dangerous than any threat our world has faced in recent memory. I am convinced that our ability to defeat the radical jihadists who threaten our nation will be significantly impacted by the prayers and leadership of America's evangelical pastors. ...

"Because God entrusted you to care for and lead His flock, you can play a key role in restoring God to the center of American life, thus strengthening our nation to confront this looming threat. ...

"Rediscovering God in America-Austin is intended to remind us that excuses are not the proper strategy when facing evil and confronting enemies. Instead, we must rally godly people and seek God's provision for the resources, the courage, and the strength necessary to win, and, ultimately, glorify Him."

You might wonder, rightly, just what that hell Perry thinks he is doing or who he thinks he is. If he wants to be an evangelical pastor, he ought to step down, go to some "bible" school and put together his own church of like-minded fruitcakes!

This kind of rightwing religious war-mongering is not part of a governor's portfolio!

Doesn't Texas have some other problems that need addressing other than some vague "jihadist" Muslim threat?

By the way, Perry is a good buddy of ol' John McSame!

Meanwhile, "Onward Christian soldiers!"

Sad! Pastors, ministers, priests, rabbis, mullahs, etc are supposed to work to promote peace and other good things. There is a place for them just as there is a place for our military. The two do not mix! The military is about killing and is needed to protect those that want peace and to guarantee that we survive. Religon should stay in its place. Separation of church and state is important as each has its role in a democratic nation.
