Charlie Crist appoints rightwinger to Florida Supreme Court

Charlie Crist tries to appear as a political moderate. He is not. He never has been. When push comes to shove, Charlie lines up on the extreme right.

Nowhere has this been more clear than in his recent appointment of Appellate Judge Charles Canady to Florida's Supreme Court.

Canady is 54, and speaks of the judicial role as "limited." What that means, of course, it is limited to decisions which bolster right-wing " Republican conservative" political ideology.

"Canady was part of the GOP-controlled House's legal team that argued Clinton should be removed for lying under oath about his affair with intern Monica Lewinsky." Canady has also served as general counsel to former Florida governor Jeb Bush who later appointed him to the appellate court. [Payback, perhaps?]

It isn't surprising then, that Canady supported Jeb's illegal voucher program (ruled by the Florida Supremes as unconstitutional). It is also not surprising that while in Congress, Canady voted "to ban gay adoptions in the District of Columbia, end preferential treatment by race in college admissions, establish voucher programs and restrict federal aid only to schools that allow voluntary prayer."

Crist thinks this is "the kind of man that certainly will serve the people of Florida well ... he'll do great."

Maybe. If you're rich, white and Republican and you love using taxpayer money for private (mostly religious) schools, and you think gays should be discriminated against, and you don't want minorities to get a fair shake in college, and you believe that only schools that allow voluntary prayer to a particular god should get federal aid.

If you are a minority person, or if you don't think the Christian god should be enshrined in our public schools, and if you don't want your tax dollars used to send other parents kids to religious schools, you are gonna be out of luck with Judge Canady.
