McCain, Catholics and Abortion

Senator John McCain traveled to Philadelphia last Wednesday to meet with a group of Roman Catholic clerics and laypersons. "The meeting ... is one in an ongoing series being held nationwide by McCain and his Catholic surrogates -- Sen. Sam Brownback, Gov. Frank Keating, and former Vatican ambassador Jim Nicholson."

Most important for our purposes, though, is the fact that before he gave his speech, McCain had a private meeting with none other than Father Frank Pavone, the main poohbah of Priests for Life (see blog essay titled "Priest tells Michigan to ban IDX abortions"). According to insidecatholic.com, Priests for Life "has been crucial in bringing non-negotiable issues to the attention of Catholic voters."

Notice the word, "non-negotiable." What chutzpah!

McCain gave a speech. But before he did that, Pavone gave a prayer. He prayed the "Lord would let all Christians know they are still His sons and daughters when they are in the voting booth."

I find that amazing. It is not really a prayer, of course, but a political statement by the reverend: "Vote for anti-abortionists!" If you're pro-choice, you obviously are not one of God's sons and daughters! And isn't it interesting that some priestly type thinks it necessary to remind God of this obligation. Maybe God doesn't give a damn?

McCain gave a speech. And guess what - the very first thing he talked about was ... ta da ... yes ... abortion! He said the "noblest words ever written" were "the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Stop right there, you old pretend Christian panderer! What about "Love your neighbor as yourself?" What about "Feed my sheep?" What about "Whosoever believes in me shall never die?" What about "God loves you?" What about "He who is without sin, cast the first stone?"

Nope. The noblest words are found right in our Constitution. But what do they mean? Well, if you're John McCain and running for president, they mean the "unborn" are people--real human beings!

Now, this is really funny: "He (McCain) reminded the Philadelphia Catholics of his pro-life voting record, adding that he would 'maintain that commitment if elected president.'" I guess old John doesn't think people will remember that he was against any attempt to negate Roe v. Wade before he was an anti-abortionist.

Oh, and Johnny said there was a "stark contrast" between he and Obama regarding the "life issue." Obama has voted against a ban on partial birth abortion, and opposed, as a state senator," legal protection for babies born during an abortion procedure."

Stark!

Jim Nicholson, introducing McCain to the Catholics, said Catholics will like McCain "because his beliefs line up squarely with them on issue (sic) like protecting unborn life, defending marriage between a man and a woman, and the all-important appointment of judges."

You will conclude, I'm sure, that John McCain is rightly called, John McBush!
