Rick Perry' tempest in a teapot

[Photo of Governor Goodhair - so dubbed by Molly Ivins - from AP at KCBY.com]

I'm constantly in awe of the fact that so many prominent Repugnicans are so damn dumb. Rick Perry, governor of Texas, who has threatened that Texas might secede from the union, is high on the list of dumbnuts.

Alex Koppelman at Salon notes that after appearing at a tea rally in his state, Perry told reporters that when Texas entered the union in 1845 "one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that."

Well, not quite. Koppelman notes that AP checked with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and found that Perry's statement is not true.

This tempest in a teapot, if you will, was discussed at The Last Chance Democracy Cafe, where it was noted some folks on the left believe that Texas leaving the union would be a good thing. It would mean the union would lose one of its largest bunch of recalcitrant right wing nogoodniks, and take a swing toward sanity!

"Besides, one can hardly help but be intrigued by any suggestion that would result in both Karl Rove and George W. Bush having to get a visa to enter the country. If Homeland Security does even a half-assed job, we should never have to see either one of them again."

What could possibly be wrong with that?

One of the more to-the-point comments made with regard to the post at The Last Chance Democracy Cafe came from "bettysdad," who said:

"I'm greatly looking forward to Texas seceding.

"After the paperwork is done, the US should go in and seize or destroy everything in Texas built by the Feds.

"Aided by the US, Mexico should invade Texas to reclaims it's [sic] stolen property.

"Then, Texas will be 'illegal aliens,' and will be dealt with appropriately."

Oh, and as The Last Chance Democracy Cafe suggests to Texas, "Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out!"

I like the way "bettysdad" thinks.

Seizing or destroying everything that was built by the Feds, help Mexico invade and reclaim, and then shoot the illegal aliens crossing the border from what used to be Texas.

Sounds good. Sounds REAL good.

Texas is only a red state because of the Rethugs gerrymandering. There are plenty of liberals here, especially in Austin and San Antonio. The thought of being stuck in a country though with the likes of Perry in charge, is pretty disconcerting. Now, if Kinky Friedman were Prez of Texas, we might be talking.

Seriously though, Perry's a complete moron. Good thing the governor doesn't really do anything. He's just a figure head. The Lt. Governor is who's important, that and the Railroad Commission.

@ A World Quite Mad - Some of what I said was "tongue-in-cheek," as I lived in Texas for over 10 years...

There are many good people in the State - some of the best. Florida reminds me a lot of Texas, except our guv is slightly less a Rethug than Perry...but we're still run by most religious rightwingnuts!

Where's Molly Ivins when we need her?

I miss Molly! Reincarnated soon maybe? LOL :D

For the most part I like living in Texas. It's nice, and people are pretty friendly if you're out in the countryside.

I'm originally from NC, and there's a bunch of religious fanatics there too (of the persuasion that women should be barefoot and pregnant, every child praying all day in school, book burnings are a good thing), and they're not quiet at all about what they want. It seems like the crazy ones are the ones you hear about so much. As they say, an empty vessel makes the most noise.

I will not miss them as much as they will miss us. Your scenario is valid. Let Texas refuse all government money, help, services, etc and do it fast, so the money can go to states that need it. There is no law that forces us to accept any money. We can always write a check to some charity, if they insist. Maybe the ex President and governor could form his own state militia. I understand he did show up or some training, until it became inconvenient, so he has some experience. He could get help from Palin, who seems to be in charge of Alaskans militia forces. Maybe Cheney can show him how to make purchases too.
