This story is being reported in newspapers around the world. What follows is from, but it appears in the and in UK papers also.

Warning of new bin Laden attack

Osama bin Laden is planning an attack against the United States that will "outdo by far" September 11, an Arab newspaper in London has reported. ...

And according to a former senior Yemeni al-Qaeda operative, the terrorist organisation has entered a "positive phase", reinforcing specific training camps around the world that will lead the next "wave of action" against the West.

The warning, on the fron page of an Arabic newspaper published in London, Al-Quds Al-Arabi -- and widely reported in the major Italian papers - quotes a person described as being "very close to al-Qaeda" in Yemen.

The paper is edited by Abdel al-Bari Atwan, who is said to be the last journalist to interview Osama bin Laden in 1996. According to the report, bin Laden is himself closely following preparations for an attack against the US and aims to "change the face of world politics and economics". The operative is quoted as saying that "this will be shown by the fact that we now control and major part of the south of Somalia." ...

... the threat level [is] described as "severe".

More here.

A quick survey of some of the major U.S. newspapers online revealed no mention of this story! Why would that be?

We were too busy with the election and now with the post mortem. We are still vulnerable in ways we haven't thought of. The terrorists are always thinking of ways to strike. There are mote than Al Queda and those we do know about. We allow politics to interfere with our goals of finding and stopping terrorists, no matter their name or national origin. Oil wealth does fund them. “Friendly” governments do look the other way for a variety of reasons,, including ideology and money!
We do not understand the willingness of the radical Islamist to die for an idea or to reject a money reward for turning in a fellow Islamist. Our morals and ethics are different, obviously.
We still have not learned to separate our various covert operations from politics! We seem to throw out experienced people and start over after elections or a scandal. We do not learn from other’s mistakes. We do not use the lessons others have learned as effectively as we should. Israel has been under attack from radical Islamists for its entire life, yet we still treat it as if it is the problem rather than the target. We allow nations to back “private” groups acting on their behalf because we haven’t figured a way to handle non governmental terrorist groups that have no borders. The UN permits members to openly preach and fund terrorism against other members, with no restrictions. Either expel them or find ways to make the UN work. If it cannot work within some areas, change the charter and keep those functions that do good for all. Get rid of those that are ineffectual! If the major powers insist upon acting unilaterally then stop the pretense.
Perhaps Obama should find away to review our participation in the UN and make changes where necessary. Now I a good time to review our participation on terms we can live with. If not, we should get out.
