McCain's take on clothes and campaign funds

Think Progress notes that in 1993, on the floor of the United States Senate, John McCain lent his support to "restrictions on the use of campaign funds for 'inherently personal purposes."

Here's what he said:

"Madam President, the amendment before the Senate is a very simple one. It restricts the use of campaign funds for inherently personal purposes. The amendment would restrict individuals from using campaign funds for such things as home mortgage payments, clothing purchases ... and vacations or other trips that are noncampaign in nature. [...}

"The use of campaign funds for items which most Americans would consider to be strictly personal reasons, in my view, erodes public and erodes it significantly."

You betcha!

Why is he afraid to criticize Palin's behavior? It is wrong. He will not allow her to speak, He will not allow her to address the charges of her taking per diem expenses to live at home; why her husband sits in the Governor’s chair and acts as Governor? Why she is spending funds on personal trips, family outings, etc? She appears to be a crook or a hypercritic, etc but is not allowed to defend herself in public. Why? Why do the crowds leave when she is gong off stage and he comes on? Is she merely a decoration or does she have something to contribute? I think she is ignorant but that’s based on her lack of willingness to speak about anything substantial. She still does not know what the Constitution defines the job of VP to be. She should have been alerted before she interviewed for the job and accepted it. What a travesty!
