What Jews really think

Spencer Ackerman writes of a "monster poll" just released by "J Street, The pro-peace/pro-Israel/pro-Palestine Jewish lobby."

According to this particular poll: "we're liberal as hell; we hate Bush; we know Bush has been a disaster for Israel; we'll support any peace deal the Israeli's make; and the only thing we're uncomfortable with to that end is giving back East Jerusalem to the Palestinians."

Ackerman breaks it down this way:

74 percent view Bush unfavorably. 83 percent disapprove of his job performance. 90 percent think the U.S. in on the wrong track. 21 percent approve of the Iraq war. Only 29 percent agree that Bush is good for Israel "and those are clearly the shmucks that kissed ass in Hebrew school and snitched when the rest of us used the synagogue phone booth and cloakroom to make out or get high."

55 percent think the U.S. should be actively engaged in Mideast peace, and 30 percent were opposed.

59 percent "agree that Israel will need to 'withdraw from most of the West Bank and dismantle many of the Israeli settlements.'" 58 percent think Israel should get out of the Golan if peace could be had with Syria (and Syria abandoned its support of Hamas and Hezbolah.) Only 44 percent, however, thought East Jerusalem should be part of Palestine.

Ackerman sums up: "J Street's poll supports its contention that the attitudes of most of us are far, far out of whack with what this country's self-appointed Jewish leaders -- the Joe Liebermans, the AIPACs, the Sheldon Adelsons, the Commentary magazines -- say we're about and what we're actually about."

The Jews of America, like most groups with labels, really think pretty much like their neighbors about most things. It depends upon education, life experiences, degree of religious participation, knowledge of history, prejudices, biases, etc.
There are approximately 6 million Jews in the USA. There are also about the same number of Arabs but I never read a survey about what they think. There are many more Blacks and Hispanics but I am not sure how they feel about most things.
I have the utmost respect for Jews, after reading their history. It has not been a pleasant one. I recommend the paper book, available in most book stores “God, Jews and History” by Max Dimont for an easy read that is most complete and well researched. I found it more than interesting and enlightening.
Bush is pretty unpopular in the USA and elsewhere, based on performance and where we stand as a nation at the moment. Jews probably think as most others do, so why do we separate them from the rest of the American public?
