Some weapons should never be used

Other than crazy fundamentalist Christian preachers and their followers in the United States, and perhaps some terrorists hiding out in the Afghan mountains, I don't know of any people who advocate the use of nuclear weapons.

There is no upside to the use of nuclear weapons. The damage done by the nuclear weaponry available today is of such severity that its use could very likely endanger or destroy all life upon the planet.

Some weapons should never be used.

Cluster bombs, like nuclear weapons, should never be used. They lay down "a carpet of dozens to hundreds of explosions with a single shell or rocket." While they can be very effective in terms of killing the enemy on the battlefield, the left over unexploded bomblets are the gift of death that keeps on giving. Civilians who accidentally hit these left over bomblets, or children that pick them up to play with them may well be blown to kingdom come.

That is why one hundred and eleven nations met in Dublin, Ireland, to deal with the problem of cluster bombs. This meeting involved 12 days of speeches, discussion and negotiation. It culminated in the adoption of a treaty banning the use of cluster bombs as well as calling for the destruction of stockpiles of this weaponry with eight years and the funding of programs to clear battlefields of the remaining bomblets.

Unfortunately, the United States was not among the group that adopted this treaty.

Other countries unwilling to be involved, include Russia, China, Israel, India and Pakistan, which along with the U.S., are the "biggest makers and users of cluster bombs."

I guess, being a Christian nation, and a paragon of morality, righteousness and democracy, we want all of our killing options left open.
