The GOP is hosed. I grew up voting Republican because I was dumb enough to think that they would balance the budget and keep government out of my life and only pander to the Christians. Now that the republican party is just front for Dobson and Christian wignuts to Talibanize our country and invade my personal liberty, and fiscal responsibility died with GW Bush. Its over. We are watching how a major party implodes and dies.
A new party, I hope that is focused on fiscal responsibility (that means balanced budgets are more important than how low the tax rate is), moderation and liberty (that means staying out of my bedroom or hospital room) needs to take its place.
All this has taught me, that I wasn't as smart as I thought I was and Jefferson and Maddison were right about the crucial importance of good public education.
America will evolve. Progress is being made. We're actually doing pretty good, but I think that the mass media and internet have are jsut throwing our society a curve ball and its taking some time to adjust. People need to learn how to be critical thinkers and every crank and nutjob can get their BS from blogosphere to major media outlets like FoxNews in the blink of an eye.

Perhaps what worries me most, especially as a former teacher, is the inability and unwillingness of so many people to reason, to think critically ... and when you add that to the utter ignorance that prevails, it's scary!
