The simple life
Page 13, Newsweek, Dec. 15, 2008.
An ad by The De Beers Family of Companies, titled "Here's to Less."
The copy begins: "Our lives are fill with things. We're overwhelmed by possessions we own but do not treasure. Stuff we buy but never love. To be thrown away in weeks rather than passed down for generations."
Blah, blah, blah.
How do we overcome this craving for things we "own but do not treasure," that "we buy but never love"?
How do we salute living with "less"?
Well, hell, we buy more. Not only that but we buy some really expensive THING, like a De Beers diamond!
How dumb do they think we are?

DeBeers is scared to death. The tech to create synthetic diamonds has been around for a while. I can't figure out how they have been able to keep a lid on it.
How safe is their monopoly when times are tough?
The future of diamonds is tenuous at best. They must be scared to death now that no one can afford their precious stones. They won't dare drop the price. It might give people ideas, like, maybe these baubles are only real value is for industrial uses.
How dumb do they think we are? For generations the public has been paying a fortune for a nearly worthless crystal. I imagine they think we're a dim bulb. I think they're right.
